Program Overview

Coral Reef Monitoring
Join our marine conservation team for a full-day hands-on coral reef monitoring experience and discover how scientists and conservationists assess the health of coral reef ecosystems in Mauritius.
The program begins with an engaging classroom session introducing participants to coral reef ecology, the importance of corals for marine biodiversity, and the major threats reefs are currently facing, including climate change, coral bleaching, pollution, and coastal development.
Participants will also learn about the monitoring techniques used by our team, including benthic monitoring methods and coral health assessments.
Following the theory session, participants will take part in two guided dives on the reef where they actively assist our team with real underwater data collection. Activities may include identifying coral types, recording reef conditions, and learning how scientific reef surveys are conducted in the field.
This experience is designed to provide a unique combination of marine science, citizen conservation, and underwater adventure while contributing valuable information for ongoing reef monitoring efforts.

Crown-of-thornes Monitoring
Take part in an active marine conservation mission and learn how scientists monitor one of the most important coral reef threats in the Indo-Pacific region — the Crown-of-Thorns starfish (COTS).
This full-day experience introduces participants to the ecology of coral reefs and the impact Crown-of-Thorns outbreaks can have on reef health. During the theory session, participants will learn about the biology and behavior of COTS, why population outbreaks occur, and how these starfish can rapidly damage coral ecosystems when left unmanaged. The session also covers the monitoring techniques used by our team to assess reef conditions and track COTS populations.
After the briefing, participants will join our marine conservation team for two guided dives where they will assist with underwater surveys and monitoring activities on the reef. Participants will learn how to identify Crown-of-Thorns starfish, record observations, assess coral conditions, and contribute to real conservation fieldwork and data collection efforts.
This program offers a unique opportunity to directly support coral reef protection while gaining hands-on experience in marine ecological monitoring and underwater conservation operations.

Underwater Acoustics & Marine soundscapes
Discover the hidden acoustic world beneath the surface and learn how scientists use sound to study and protect marine ecosystems.
This unique conservation experience introduces participants to the fascinating field of underwater acoustics and the role sound plays in the ocean environment.
The program begins with an interactive theory session covering the fundamentals of underwater sound, how sound travels in the ocean, and the growing impact of human-generated underwater noise on marine life and coral reef ecosystems. Participants will also explore the importance of natural reef soundscapes, how marine animals use sound for communication and navigation, and how acoustic monitoring supports marine conservation and research.
Participants will then receive hands-on hydrophone training and learn how underwater acoustic recordings are collected in the field. During two guided dives, participants will have the opportunity to listen to the reef environment, assist with hydrophone deployments and recordings, and experience the unique sounds of marine ecosystems firsthand.
This program combines marine science, technology, and diving to provide an immersive introduction to the rapidly growing field of marine bioacoustics and underwater soundscape monitoring.
